Dear Mrs. Parks –commissioned, performed and recorded in 2009 by The Detroit Symphony Orchestra and now performed for the first time in Mr. Lokumbe’s home state of Texas– celebrates the life of Rosa Parks, the civil rights movement heroine.

Incorporating musical traditions from blues, jazz, African, and gospel music, Dear Mrs. Parks follows three imaginary letters to Rosa Parks from three different voices in the civil rights movement – an activist, a martyr, and a beneficiary– in a tightly orchestrated and inspirational composition.

This one-night-only performance at The Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum includes an ensemble of Texas artists, including a jazz quintet, choir and child soloists.

Hanniba Lokumbe wrote both the score and the libretto. Lokumbe’s career in music spans over four decades. He is the recipient of numerous awards including a Bessie award, numerous NEA’s, a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, and most recently the prestigious USA Artist award. He has performed and composed works for the Kronos Quartet, the Philadelphia, Baltimore, National, Cleveland, St Louis, Detroit and Houston symphonies.

The February 13 performance of Dear Mrs. Parks will benefit Meals on Wheels and More and Greater Calvary Schools and support a series of community workshops on the civil rights movement in Texas.
