World Parliament of Religions – In December of 2009 Trinity’s Rowan Hartin flew to Melbourne, Australia to participate in the World Parliament of Religions gathering, a conference that takes place every five years. Among others, she heard powerful speakers like the Dalai Lama and Nelson Mandela. Rowan has agreed to teach this four session class on the highlights of that experience. When she arrived in Melbourne she posted this on her Facebook page: “Got the Parliament program guide, and it’s almost 400 pages! My geeky little heart is in heaven.”

The Parliament did these things:

• Convened religious and civil leaders and people of faith, spirit and goodwill from at least or more than 80 countries
• Fostered interreligious, civil and cross-cultural dialogue on important local, national, and global issues
• Invited over 10,000 participants to work together for a just, peaceful, and harmonious society
• Had global appeal, covering social concerns including understanding and respecting diversity, peace and Indigenous reconciliation
• Engaged worldwide religious, spiritual, secular, environmental, business and educational leaders to seek commitment and practical solutions through dialogue.
• Promoted and encouraged social cohesion within societies locally and across the world.

The class is discussion-oriented and is $10 per person to defray the cost of copying, etc.

Evenings With Robert Frost – Mark Lett will be leading a 4 week class exploring the poetry of Robert Frost. Each night the participants will look at one major Frost poem and two or three others. They will examine Frost’s themes, content, structure, and style. Most importantly, they will read the poems aloud. The class will be discussion-based with an emphasis on the fun of reading Robert Frost. Copies of the poems will be provided, so no book is needed.
The class is discussion-oriented and is $10 per person to defray the cost of copying, etc.

Crucial Conversations: Tools For Talking When Stakes Are High – Each of us have those moments in our lives when we know that the conversation we are about to have is going to have significant consequences. These conversations happen at work and in our personal relationships, and we often find ourselves letting our emotions cloud what we say and what we hear. We catch ourselves having the same arguments repeatedly, expecting different results. The book Crucial Conversations: Tools For Talking When Stakes Are High presents a step-by-step guide to preparing for highly charged situations, creating “safety” in relationships to facilitate dialogue, and engaging in real, meaningful communication in which everyone’s input is valuable and important. This group will engage in activities to explore the concepts presented in the book, and will use the information as a springboard for discussions.
