About the Kawangware Water Well Project …
Redeemer Lutheran Church in Austin, Texas has sent missionary teams to the slum communities near Nairobi, Kenya for the last three years. Over the course of these visits, Redeemer has built a relationship with the Kawangware Parish of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Kenya (ELCK), located in the Kawangware slum. The Kawangware Parish has a unique and dedicated relationship to the surrounding community and is an oasis of hope in an area of overwhelming struggle. Of all the challenges this community faces, none is more fundamental than the desperate need for clean water.
The Kawangware slum has about 800,000 inhabitants and has one of the highest costs of living in the world. As a result, the area is plagued by water-borne diseases, respiratory and aspiratory pneumonia, malaria and airborne diseases. Residents may only get one meal per day and their homes have no electricity or running water. Most of what little water is available is contaminated. Half of the children do not have parents.
In the spirit of giving the gift of water, the Kawangware Water Well Project was born. Our team is dedicated to the goal of bringing fresh drinking water to this community. The water well will be located on the Kawangware Parish property.
In partnership with Living Water International and in conjunction with the ELCK, plans are underway to install a well on the grounds of the Kawangware Parish. It is our hope that this water well will come to fruition and that the precious resource will be used freely and by many.
