Urban Connection Austin is a local nonprofit agency that needs volunteers to assist in their delivery of lunches to kids in the lower income neighborhoods of north Austin this summer. This program, known as the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP), is an extension of the free and reduced lunch program, sponsored in local schools by the Texas Department of Agriculture and the USDA. This year, UCA is expanding the reach of this program beyond the established sites in the city, like schools and recreation centers that have programs for children, to the places where these kids live, in an attempt to feed more than the 4% of eligible kids that were fed last summer. To accomplish this they need an army of volunteers. Many slots have been filled, but many more remain.
Four sites have been designated for delivering meals, all of them within a mile radius of Rundberg Lane and IH-35. Volunteers need no previous experience or training to help. As the mobile delivery unit proceeds to each site, they will need 3 – 4 volunteers to spend one hour helping them distribute these lunches and interacting with the kids there. Their program began on June 14 and extends through August 13. Thank you for your support of this very important ministry.
