Job Opportunity: Director of Spiritual Education

Director of Spiritual Education for Children and Youth (20 hours per week)

OR

Director of Lifetime Spiritual Education  (30 hours per week)

Working under the general supervision of the Lead Minister, the Director of Spiritual Education for Children and Youth (DSE) creates, implements, and maintains religious education programs for children and youth, and provides support, structure, and accountability to lay-led adult education and small group ministries. The DSE’s scope of work is flexible and depends on the strengths of the individual. The successful candidate demonstrates and appreciates the guiding principles of Trinity Church of Austin.

Job Type: Part-time, exempt contract position for one year beginning January 2022.

Hours and Time Commitment: Negotiable, depending upon the scope of work determined in collaboration with the supervising minister. Time commitment ranges between 20 and 30 hours of effort per week, mostly performed onsite.

Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree and three years of experience in religious education, childhood education, or demonstrably related field; OR master’s degree and one year of such experience; OR a combination of other equivalent education and demonstrably related experiences; AND successful completion of the UMC’s Safe Gatherings training, which includes a comprehensive background check.

Other Preferred Qualifications: Highly desirable qualifications include bilingual abilities, especially Spanish and ASL; experience or training working with non-neurotypical, LGBTQ+, trans and other gender non-conforming children, youth, or adults; and talents to share in music, drama, art, sports, or other non-traditional areas, following on the words of St. Francis of Assisi: “Preach the gospel at all times. If you must, use words.”

Job Description:

Director of Spiritual Education for Children and Youth (20 hours per week)

With Trinity Children and Youth: Core Beliefs  as a rubric, and in collaboration with parents and staff, the Director:

– Keeps Trinity Church abreast of current scholarship and justice resources in education and spiritual development, using best practices and materials from the United Church of Christ, the Unitarian Universalist Association, and other appropriate resources
– Communicates with families and staff about regular and special events through appropriate email, social media, and phone lists; helps families connect and form communities; maintains accurate and secure information on incoming children and families via annual Family Information Forms; remembers children’s birthdays.
– Recruits, hires, and trains new childcare team members; schedules and manages workers’ hours through Deputy.
– Provides spiritual and emotional support to families; keeps the Lead Minister apprised of family situations and refer when the additional pastoral support is needed
– Attends monthly Leadership Council meetings and serves as liaison between leadership and families.

Director of Lifetime Spiritual Education  (30 hours per week)

(30 hours per week; responsible for all the above AND the following:

– Plans joyful play for children pre-K through high school by selecting curricula and activities, lessons, crafts, or other learning experiences for children and youth; training childcare workers and guiding volunteers; connecting and advising and parents to build a positive, multi-generational learning environment
– Assists small group leaders and lay leaders of adult education classes in finding curriculum materials, accessing denominational resources, scheduling small group activities, and coordinating small group curricula with youth and children’s programs
– Coordinates adult educational opportunities with youth and children’s activities, especially to offer educational experiences or small group experiences for parents of children in Trinity programs
– Assists Trinity staff with management and facilitation of adult small groups, particularly where participants in small groups or Sunday school classes have children or youth involved in education
– Works to enhance Trinity Church of Austin’s culture as a place of lifelong learning in a multi-generational environment of learning and sharing.

Schedule and Pay Rate

Whether the successful candidate commits to 20 hours per week or 30 hours per week, the rate of pay will be the same.

Starting salary ranges from $17.50 – $19, negotiable commensurate with experience.

A background check and completion of provided safety training for working with minors are required for this position.
